Slabbaert is/was a creature Flemish people called a Nekker, nix or Nikker. It was believed to be a 'waterdevil' who came out at night to search for lost children. Upon finding a child, he would then abduct it to a pond or ditch and devour it.

Some of you who live in Belgium/Flanders certainly have heard about the 'Nekkerhal' or a trainstation called 'Nekkerspoel'. Those names carry on the legacy and folklore of Slabbaert.
